What is Coeliac Disease?

• Gene (HLA) Testing. – If the results of blood testing or a small bowel biopsy procedure do not determine a definite diagnosis of coeliac disease, this gene test is done as a blood test or a buccal (cheek) scraping process. More than 99 percent of patients who have this small bowel disease test positively as having the genes HLA DQ2, HLA DQ8 or parts of them. However, just 1 in every 30 patients who test positive for HLA DQ2 or HLA DQ8 genes have or will develop coeliac disease. If the results of this gene testing are positive for a patient, this testing should be followed by a gluten challenge (resuming ingestion of gluten by the patient and a waiting period) and then by a small bowel biopsy to detect and diagnose coeliac disease, if it is present.
